Well a time has come that I have been fearing for some time now. My Blackberry Curve 8330 (yea it’s four years old) has been giving me a lot of trouble recently and I think it’s about to kick the can. So naturally I’ve been looking into getting a new phone. The main reason why I love my Blackberry and the reason I got it in the first place was because of the keyboard. I’m a big texter and emailer so the keyboard came in handy really well for me. The problem is there are no phones with keyboards anymore. The new Blackberry is going to be a touch screen so it leaves me with no options.
Naturally I am strongly considering the iPhone, specifically the 4S. With a new 2 year contract I can get it now for $99.99, I think that’s a pretty good deal. But there are several things I need to consider before diving into the iPhone world. The first and possibly biggest hurdle is that I may have to swallow some pride if I get the iPhone. For years I have been talking smack about the iPhone saying how it is an inferior phone to the Blackberry and I’ll never get one. By getting one I’m essentially admitting I’m wrong. Not easy for a prideful guy like myself.
Another question I’m asking myself is do I really need it? I definitely need a new phone but there are other phones that I can get for free (even the iPhone 4). Do I really need to or even want to spend $100 on a new phone? I wouldn’t say I am a frugal person but I’m definitely fiscally responsible. When it comes to spending money I always hesitate when it comes to spending on ‘things’ so to say but not when it comes to ‘experiences’. Even though I am a person who works out a lot I have a hard time spending $100 on a pair of sneakers but I have no problem spending $250 on a Jay-Z and Eminem concert ticket. The iPhone definitely falls into the ‘thing’ category.
A positive to getting the phone is that my girlfriend has an iPhone and she is always begging me to get one. She always wants to facetime, snapchat, send me a whole bunch of emoticons. In a long distance relationship you have to get creative to make the relationship as normal as possible. You’d be surprised how far an emoticon goes. And as far as the $100 that I have to lay out to get one, I can actually use some credit card reward dollars that I have sitting on both my Discover and Bank of America card that total $75!! So I really only need to spend $25 of my own money, not too bad if you ask me.
At the end of the day I think I am going to pull the trigger and make the plunge into the iPhone world! The bottom line is that with starting this blog and all the things the iPhone will allow me to do I think I’m making the right choice. Just like with this blog I think I need to start pushing myself to do things I wouldn’t normally do and this is definitely one of them.
Question to my readers: What type of phone do you have?
